What I Thought Was True

What I Thought Was True by Huntley Fitzpatrick

Gwen Castle's Biggest Mistake Ever, Cassidy Somers, is slumming it as a yard boy on her Nantucket-esque island this summer. He's a rich kid from across the bridge in Stony Bay, and she hails from a family of fishermen and housecleaners who keep the island's summer people happy. Gwen worries a life of cleaning houses will be her fate too, but just when it looks like she'll never escape her past—or the island—Gwen's dad gives her some shocking advice. Sparks fly and secret histories unspool as Gwen spends a gorgeous, restless summer struggling to resolve what she thought was true—about the place she lives, the people she loves, and even herself—with what really is.

Gwen is a townie. She lives on the island year round. It's summer again and all the rich kids are back at their summer homes.  A few though hold bad thoughts for Gwen.  Two specifically, and all she wants is to avoid them at all costs. She can't escape them though. Cassidy is the new yard boy, and is just about everywhere she is. Too bad he's always around and is so charming. He even offers to teach her little brother how to swim. At some point Gwen has to stop running from the past and confront it. When she finds out that what she thought happened didn't, how does she take the news that the fling she had was more than that.

I really enjoyed the story, the author weaves a tale so that you feel like you're watching from the sidelines. Jumping between last summer and this one is seamless.  Dealing with life, Gwen seems to have grown up way too fast. She works for her family to help with money, so she's a tad bitter when Cass is 'slumming' and being the new yard boy. There is so much going on that I can't possibly share it all now. Please read this book, its amazing. Leave the author some love in the form of a review!
